Mahabharata – A Mathematical Analysis

I recently came across few articles as well as heated discussions with a history teacher who happens to be very religious person.

He told me that Mahabharata is a history book and Bhagavad Gita is a divine book. All things mentioned in Mahabharata happened in reality so God (Krishna) existed in real and Lord Krishna narrated Hindu’s divine book called Bhagavad Gita at war time.

Since, these books are very popular and holy for world’s 3rd largest religion(Hindu), these kind of claims forced me to read Mahabharata and evaluate its facts to know if its historical book or mythical book or …..

Let’s take out of paper and calculator and do some simple maths –

• As per book, Mahabharata is having story of just one king and his family. There was some dispute is family so they fought a battle at a place called “Kurukshetra” for 18 days. In 18 days, an army 18 “Akshohini” died.

As per book itself,
1 “Akshohini” = 21,870 chariots + 21,870 elephants + 65,610 horses + 109,350 foot soldiers
= 218700
Let’s assume that at least 2 people were on each 21,870 chariots = 43,740
At least 2 people were sitting on each elephants = 43,740
And one each on every horse = 65,610
If we add these numbers, it reaches to 371,790 number of soldiers + animals

There were total 18 units like that so the final figure comes to 3,71,790 x 18
(21,870 elephants + 65,610 horse + 65,610 horse riders + 109,350 foot soldiers) = 66,92,220

As per claims, this battle happened around 1000 BCE (means 3000 years back). At that time human not invented any WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction). Battle was fought by hands + sword + bow-arrows + few other ancient weapons

• Is it possible to kill over six million (66,92,220 people + animals) in just a short span of 18 days (with just 8 hours of fight per day – no night fighting)? Think about population figures 3000 years back.
Also take in consideration of eating/sleeping difficulties of such a huge army.

Let’s stick to maths only and examine other facts (biology, physics and chemistry aspects later)

• King Sushbindu was having 1 lac queens (1,00,000) and every queen gave birth to 1 thousand sons (1000) so King was having total 10 crores sons (10,00,00,000)
Now king donated all his sons to 10 crore priests (10,00,00,000) plus 100 chariots + 100 elephants to each priest.

• So finally each priest got 1 son + 100 chariots + 100 elephants, which means
10,00,00,000 x 100 = Ten Billion Elephants possible 3000 years back?
10,00,00,000 x 100 = Ten Billion Chariots possible 3000 years back?

Is there any proof that world population was more than 1(king) + 1,00,000 (queens) + 10,00,00,000 (sons) + 10,00,00,000 (priests) = 20,01,00,001 humans existed on this earth 3000 years back?

• Another king was doing something more bizarre – The king used to donate 1,60,000 cows + 10,000 horse + 10,0000 gold coins every morning for 100 years.
• It means he donated a total of –
Cows = 1,60,000 x 365 x 100 = 5,84,00,00,000 (don’t blink, its more than “five billion” cows)
Horses = 1000 x 365 x 100 = 3,65,00,000
gold coins = 100000 x 365 x 100 = 36,50,00,0000 (around 4 billion gold coin even if we assume each coin was just 10 gram it comes out forty million kilogram of gold for coins only, what about other usage?)

Now, people can argue that cows and horse cant live for 100 years so final figure is wrong. But even if we take average life of horse and cows were just 10 years, king needed 58,40,00,000 cows every ten years which is not possible as story dates back to 3000 years. Plus, gold was not easily available at that time to make so many coins every year and even if more than 4 billion coins were made on those days, where it disappeared? We are able to find dinosaurs fossils but unable to find these “gold” coins.

The above was pure mathematical analysis. Next time, I will try to analyze it biologically (how a king can give birth to one hundred million or how can he handle one hundred thousand wife or how can you give birth to 100 sons with a single wife – considering human pregnancy time of 9 months or how can you get pregnant by looking at other man akka virgin birth or …..)

Why doesn’t your article (or at least the main argument, perhaps better written) get published anywhere in the mainstream media?…..

… i am just curious… shouldn’t this be in the very least, interesting to a lot of people?

Nice analysis..Iam not sure you will see this reply or comment…but just for the facts….Mahabharath has been tweaked to its core by many authors according to their whimps and fancies and sometimes according to their kings whimps and fancies over all these years…

Iam a firm believer that Mahabharata and Ramayan are indeed true happenings and there has been proofs and evidences for the same ….I wont be able to brief them all in this comment …please google for the same ….

There has been evidences where in whole army or the whole town has been wiped out by single weapon ( Brahmaastra aka nukes) …I know u might be laughing out your heart out when u see this…but there are facts about the 50 times radioactivity of the soil where Mahabharata took place ….

See there has been evidences of previous generations wiping out complete proof of their technology..due to misuse as they have seen their generaton being wiped out due to same issues….( as you can see Pandavas were is so much guilt after the war..they renounced everythning and went to piligrimage and they died on the way)…

Teachers and lecturers are of no use in educating kids about these great epic (leave alone these epics any subject for that matter LOL) …and eevn dont go by the SAGAR serials they show comedy in place of these epics…they show these epics as some kids fantasy….

Google about Mahabharata you will be enlightened (thats what I have been doing from past 15 days and trust me if given a chance I would certainly get into research )

Happy searching!!!!!

Then where is your so called ‘Original Mahabharath’ ? If there is so much tweaking, why you not write or search for real one?

Your firm belief has nothing to do with truth.
Christians are firm believer that those who are not worshiping son – jesus will go to hell.
Muslims are firm believer that those who are not worshiping allah will go to hell.
In your own hindu religion, if you are not worshiping “trimurti”, they may kill you or your family e.g. hiranyakashyap
So belief is not the truth. If i believe that you are stupid, it dosnt make you stupid. You may be intelligent enough which is beyond my belief.

May i know the name that this place? Lets have a field trip of that place with radioactive meter and see the truth our self. Do you agree?

Why you not be google for us and enlighten us with your intelligence and higher technology?

@ Mr Article Writer or whomsever it may concern,

The views which were expressed were my analysis and my reading about these great epics …Iam not in logger heads with any person or religion ….neither your contradictions have any proof …give me one good proof where in you can say ..these didnt happen……many great inventions were ridiculed before it went live…dont get into religious verbal conflicts..thats too bad ..I can see from your replies you are an immature kid who does even think and keeps contradicting others at whatever they say…so Iam not your teacher or parent to feed you with information. or take you to some field trip ..I have been places and have exp things…so grow up and do you know one saying ” you can explain a person who knows nothing , you can expalin to a person who knows complete but never can convince or explain to a person who knows half”

• Anonymous says:

The proof is in NASA – read anything by C Jaffrelot on google and you will get your answer.

So only your analysis is true and other’s is false. What a proof you provided. 😛
You can have belief that your father is father of all indians but you have to prove it and belief holding no legal status. Thats why your own Govt. said in court that there is no proof that these epics are true.
….neither your contradictions have any proof …give me one good proof where in you can say ..these didnt happen……
Burden of proof lies on person who is claiming that this happened. E.g. If you are saying, 2+2=5, You have to prove it not the other person who is saying “no its not 5”. You studied a lot of these “epics” but not any writer with any substance such as Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Dan Dennett etc. So critical thinking is not your forte. Neither you not people who claiming that once Dinosaur existed on this earth ever seen the real dinosaur but they claimed with fossil records and other remains which was accepted as truth while your epic claims not able to produce any claim till date and thats what writer seems pointing out in this article.
All the above are pure bullshit. For me, you seems a mature person with myopia who cant see the truth and for you (due to overage), worrying about after life is more important than naked truth but there is never late to see the truth and stop believing in sky daddies. You are made of carbon and going back to be carbon again after few years/decades/centuries and no sky friend can save you from this fate.

To add to the inconsistencies of the text – the place where the Bhagvad Gita begins is Krishna telling Arjuna – in the war do not even spare your own brothers because they have done wrong, and it is your divine duty to kill them. WTF?? this is non-violent religion?

• Anonymous says:

@ Chinmay,

see Chinmay , no religion is non violent…what is so inconsistency about it …you can even see in daily life ..brothers ditch brothers for money land ..properties…no big deal in it..first read properly and comment….on what basis are u telling its non violent religion…even non violent religion like Buddhism teaches you martial arts..do you about the origin of martial arts get the facts right befor just spewing those profanities at a forum…

Ravikiran sir,

I do not wish to compare Hinduism with any other religion, because Hindu’s claim that their religion is the mother of all religions. Evene Buddhism has come out of Hinduism is their claim, and to some extent there is borrowing. But your inanity is visible in the fact that you attach human behavior to the tenets of religion. Brother ditching brother is not a question for religion to resolve.

I dont like Buddhism either, but your ‘Mayopia’ as suggested above by Truth-seeker, is hindering you from looking at the more important spiritual content of Buddhism. SO please lay to rest your invalid opinions. I am sure you are going to be banned from the forum, because this is for Scientific Indians, not for street artists.

Early indologists wished to control & convert the followers of Vedic Culture, therefore they widely propagated that the Vedas were simply mythology.

Max Muller, perhaps the most well known early sanskritist and indologist, although later in life he glorified the Vedas, initially wrote that the “Vedas were worse than savage” and “India must be conquered again by education… it’s religion is doomed”

Thomas Macaulay, who introduced English education into India wanted to make the residents into a race that was: “Indian in blood and color, but English in taste, in opinion, in morals, and in intellect.”

However, the German Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer stated that the Sanskrit understanding of these Indologists was like that of young schoolboys.

These early Indologists:

• Devised the Aryan Invasion theory, denying India’s Vedic past

• They taught that the English educational system is superior

• They intentionally misinterpreted sanskrit texts to make the Vedas look primitive.

• And they systematically tried to make Indians ashamed of their own culture

• Thus the actions of these indologists seems to indicate that they were motivated by a racial bias.

In a short span of time we can destroy huge no of fellows and animals if we we are using necliar weapons .in mahabharatha its clearly said they are using weapons like Brahmasthre,Pasupathasthre, and so on why we we cant assume these are the same weapons of modern science more over krishna all ready quoted the modern basic theory “‘Energy canot destroy but it can change to one form to another” by his words nasatho vidyathe abhavo na bhavo vidyathe sada” .by seeing this quote the famouse einsteen quoted once if he had seen bhagavad geetha some years back he could have been made the atom bomb much earlier than its original invented time. so we have to assume we were used the atomic weapons during mahabhartha war vyasa may have given the name as brahmasthra by saying this is the ultimate weapon made up of paramanu

how can a lady to give 100 sons, refer to the modern science now using cloning technology everithing is possible and in mahabharatha vyasa given the assistance to ghandhari while she got abortion he is a muni the name muni in ancient era is similar to our scientists

Without sufficient knowledge on a subject, do not attempt to support it or ridicule it.

It is said that the Brahmastra was a weapon that was seldom used, but if used, the effects were similar to using the present day nuclear weapon. Well before the Second World War of the present era when Japan was a victim of a merciless act, it was said that the effects of using Brahmastra involved environmental damage, destroying the land where it was used by making the land barren, severe reduction in rainfall, where men and women became infertile and where the land developed cracks like in a drought.

My only suggestion is to read more, learn more and understand more…

Yes, Ashwin. We need to read the analysis made on Plato’s Atlantis. Probably, the article writer counts population basing his thoughts and calculations on present count and time and period of Mahabharat on the cut off date of Christian era.
Will he please clarify how the time and day are calculated on Vedic methods?
I would request the writers and readers to study these two aspects, stellar positions, the end of the Dynasty and the arrival of kaliyug.

I request the author to clarify the source material he read and from which point of Mahabharat to which point. Then probably I can analyse his views and make attempt to get my own self clarified or give the author feedback inputs.
